School Profile

Dayton Christian Homeschool, like all the schools in the Dayton Christian School System, is chartered by the State of Ohio and accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International.

Principal: Stephanie Osborne

Number of Students in Grades K-12: 132

·        Student Status:  Permanent files are maintained for all DC Homeschool students, and DC Homeschool families are not required to notify their local school districts of their homeschooling plans.

·        Special Education Assessment and Services:  DC Homeschool students have access to testing services through the DCSS Educational Assessment Office.  The Educational Assessment Office will provide families with individualized educational plans for students whose test scores qualify them for special needs.

·        Sports and Fine Arts Opportunities:  DC Homeschool students may participate in on-campus sports and fine arts activities at one DCSS campus (Xenia Christian or Dayton Christian) as opportunities are available.  Students must meet sports eligibility requirements.

Grades K-8

·        Curriculum and Assessment:

o       DCSS provides families with approved curriculum similar to that used on the traditional DCSS campuses.  Parents may choose to use alternative textbooks and materials with approval by the Homeschool Principal.

o       Parents meet monthly with an assigned Homeschool Coordinator (certified teacher) to review student progress.  The Homeschool Coordinator completes a mid-year and an end-of-year evaluation for each student.  The evaluation is placed in the student’s permanent file.

o       Standardized testing is provided each April for all K-8 students.

·        Other Opportunities

o       Inschool Days are held at a local church approximately twice per month.  They provide the students with enrichment classes, an opportunity to experience peer interaction in a Christian environment, and a situation in which he/she is under the godly leadership of outside authority.

o       Field trips are planned and arranged by the Homeschool Office for families in the program.

o       DC Homeschool is represented at many ACSI Student Activities events, such as the Speech Meet and Spelling Bee.

o       Homeschool families have access to a Resource Room which houses various support books and  materials.  Resources include items such as science materials, foreign language curriculum, literature guides, and homeschool support books.

Grades 9-12

Dayton Christian School System offers a unique program that combines homeschooling (schooling at home by the home) with residency in a traditional high school. This blend of schooling options is designed to offer a student the opportunity to graduate with a fully-accredited diploma and to participate in traditional school activities while still benefitting from the homeschooling experience.

·        Curriculum and Assessment:

o       Courses of study, including Critical Learning Skills, are written by DCSS. They are reviewed and approved by the administrative team and the superintendent. Textbooks at DCSS are eclectic in nature. Where possible we use quality Christian materials (i.e., Bob Jones University Press, Abeka Books), but where a Christian text does not exist DCSS either writes its own curriculum or integrates biblical principles into secular textbooks.

o       Families have some flexibility when choosing the method by which each course will be assessed by DCSS.  While each option is not available for every class, possibilities for accountability include:

§         Evaluation of DCSS Critical Learning Skills by an on-campus teacher.  The teaching parent initially grades all coursework and maintains grade records.

§         Evaluation of textbook publishers’ tests and DCSS-approved projects by an on-campus teacher. The teaching parent initially grades all coursework and maintains grade records.

§         Completion of a course through Seven Star Academy or other DCSS-approved accredited agency with the parent as the academic coach (Maximum of two credits per year).

·        On-Campus Opportunities

o       Each student is identified as either a Xenia Christian or Dayton Christian High School student and attends at least one class per year on campus.

o       Students may participate in mission trips, NHS, chapel, fine arts, sports, etc.  Availability of activities and events varies with each campus (XCHS and DCHS).

" Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."  Deuteronomy 6:5-8
